Daily Dose 60: Practice

The new is always hesitant, slow, awkward. New skills need methodical attention before becoming natural.

Tricky fingerings worked out slowly on the piano become second nature and “easy,” once conquered.

The novice cook’s first meal often arrives in a rather unusual course sequence, while an experienced cook lays out a feast with only a rustle of busyness.

The new teacher spends every night preparing the lesson plan for one day’s lessons. The veteran teacher plans full lessons in minutes, compensating for individual and class needs all at the same time.

The distinction is not innate ability, but concentrated practice. Read more

Daily Dose 56: Broken Windows

Vandalism was rampant in New York when Mayor Giuiliani took over. More police and stricter law enforcement did not solve the problem, but fixing broken windows did. Repeatedly repairing windows broken by vandals sent a message that both the factory and its location were valuable assets.

If the mayor and his consultants had been sitting on Grandma’s porch 150 years ago, she would have told them, “A stitch in time, saves nine.” Read more

Daily Dose 55: Better Campsites

A tried and true Boy Scout rule was to leave the campsite better than you found it. Was the campfire smoking when you arrived? Make sure your campfire is out well before you leave—and gather a nice stack of kindling and wood to leave for the next camper.

When was the last time you were in the midst of a major project and found something crucial had been overlooked or was missing? All your good intentions ground to a halt, the rhythm broke, you got discouraged, perhaps the whole project was set aside.

What feels worse than that sick chagrin in your stomach when something you ought to have done was not done and the day of reckoning has arrived? Read more

How about another personal favorite Picture for My Mind?

C. H. Spurgeon wrote in his Sword and Trowel of a man filling a large box with cannon balls. Needless to say, it did not take too many balls before the box was full. Not so, says Spurgeon. The box would only be full of cannon balls, but it was not truly full. The space around the cannon balls could be filled with shot (think BBs, modern America), and when no more shot would fit, then a quantity of sand could still be poured into the nooks and crannies. There is an infinite point-number line-math lesson in there somewhere!  Read more
